Monty is one of the great communicators of television, and Gardeners’ World has been, for me, the ultimate escapist show, a celebration of life in which everyone was pleasant, the colours were pretty and Nigel the golden retriever (RIP) could be relied on to drop a slobbery tennis ball into Monty’s barrow.

The predictability of the gardening cycle and the annual reappearance of items on making your compost and the best time to sow sweet peas was once comforting in the extreme. Then the outside world began to creep its way in, like an invasive knotweed.
